Medical Facilities Nice People Natural Beauty Shopping Mountains Places to Visit La Ceiba (pop. 175,000) the third largest city in Honduras, is located about two hours east of San Pedro Sula, (pop. 675,000) which is the commercial and business center of Honduras. Tegucigalpa (pop. 750,000), about 200 miles south is the country’s capital. American style shopping, supermarkets, and restaurants abound in La Ceiba, along with excellent local restaurants. Of course, there is always the option for daily shopping at the colorful open-air markets located throughout the city. Turistas are always welcome here, and dollars are always appreciated. The Lempira (the Honduran currency) is tied to the US dollar with little fluctuation. Currently a lempira, or “lemp” is about 5.26 cents. Typical wages for let's say yard work or housekeeping would run about 125–175 lempiras ($6.50-$9.20) per day, which is probably somewhat cheaper than you will find in Vancouver or Atlanta. First rate medical facilities such as the D’Antoni Hospital, and American type pharmacies, are available in La Ceiba. Medical and dental care is very good here, and, obviously, extremely affordable. For example, first quality dental crowns would be priced at around $200. La Ceiba has long been the operational hub of the Standard Fruit Company (also known as Dole) producers of bananas, pineapples, grapefruits and many other agricultural goods that Honduras exports. Just west of La Ceiba, Dole operates a pineapple plantation of some 4,000 acres, so, if you like Piña Coladas, you’ve come to the right place. Due to its natural beauty, La Ceiba has been declared by the Honduran Government as "The Capital of Ecotourism". The whole area actually looks a lot like Hawaii, but without the lava flows. Among La Ceiba’s natural attractions is the imposing Pico Bonito mountain (almost 8,000 feet), which is also a stunning national park. In this tropical rainforest there are fantastic waterfalls and absolutely spectacular landscapes. It is world renowned for the panoply of exotic birds, monkeys, and flowers. Nearby you also find the Cangrejal River, one of the few rivers in Central America for those few crazed Americans and Canadians who enjoy sports like white water rafting and canoeing. FYI, Americans and Canadians are both affectionately referred to here as “Gringos”. |
